Smith Anderson Lawyers Participate in “Intellectual Property and Cyberlaw Society” Panel at Duke Law School
Raleigh, NC (November 23, 2009) - Kelli Ovies and Robert Rehm, lawyers in Smith Anderson’s Intellectual Property Practice Group, participated in a panel discussion sponsored by the “Intellectual Property and Cyberlaw Society” at Duke Law School. Also on the panel was Venus Liles, a third year law student at Duke. The speakers shared experiences as well as answered questions posed by the students. They provided interviewing tips and other advice designed to help the students gauge their interest in pursuing a career in intellectual property law.
Rehm spoke about how his years as a practicing electrical engineer and working in a judicial internship after his first year of law school set him on a course to become, initially, a patent litigator in Washington, D.C. and, most recently, an intellectual property lawyer at Smith Anderson. He focuses primarily on transactional matters involving all types of intellectual property. Rehm explained, “My interest in intellectual property law derives in large part from the cutting-edge, rapidly evolving nature of intellectual property law and the issues that intellectual property attorneys are called upon to resolve.”
Ovies related her experiences as an intellectual property lawyer in her fourth year of practice. She handles both intellectual property transactional matters such as trademark prosecution and general commercial litigation matters. She emphasized that in a general practice law firm, such as Smith Anderson, lawyers have the flexibility of working not only on intellectual property matters but also matters in other practice areas.
