Smith Anderson Expands its Technology Practice with the Hiring of Philip Cardinale
(Raleigh, N.C.) Smith Anderson announces the hiring of accomplished intellectual property and technology lawyer Philip Cardinale, who joins as a member of the firm’s Technology practice group. Phil brings extensive experience to the Technology team having advised several Fortune 50 companies and other retail, telecommunications, software and start-up companies, as well as numerous creative-sector clients, including in the fields of fashion, entertainment, gaming, music, and furniture design.
Phil regularly helps clients with the preparation and negotiation of the full range of technology and commercial contracts commonly encountered by technology clients. He also has broad experience in intellectual property rights acquisition, litigation and counseling in matters focusing on trademark, trade dress, copyright, privacy/publicity rights, e-commerce, social media and design law, as well as transactions involving these rights.
Phil has been recognized with leadership positions in several intellectual property and technology-related professional organizations, including serving as an American Bar Association Liaison to the World Intellectual Property Organization. Prior to joining Smith Anderson, Phil practiced in the intellectual property group of a national law firm in Washington, D.C. He is also a former print journalist and college teacher, has a doctorate in English literature from the University of Oxford (UK), and has published academic articles in several fields.
Smith Anderson’s Technology team supports clients of all sizes, from emerging start-ups and university spinouts to publicly traded companies, technology-focused private equity firms and venture capital firms. That support consists of strategic guidance in the development, acquisition, commercialization and protection of technology products and services; identification and evaluation of intellectual property risks and opportunities; counsel on data use, privacy and security; and strategic acquisitions and divestitures of technology-based companies and assets, including mergers and acquisitions and licensing.
