Smith Anderson Bolsters its Renewable Energy Practice Welcoming Energy Transactional Attorney Mark Griffith

(Raleigh, N.C.) Mark Griffith, an accomplished corporate attorney with extensive energy transaction experience, has joined Smith Anderson as the newest member of its Energy and Renewable Energy and M&A practice teams.

Mark has led energy transactions involving the acquisition or sale of over a dozen renewable energy facilities, including two of the then-largest solar facilities in North Carolina, has represented renewable developers and some of the nation’s largest utilities in relation to their renewable transactions, and has represented clients in stock and asset sales, joint ventures, and third-party service arrangements. He also has experience in economic development and matters related to financial institutions.

"We are pleased to welcome Mark to the firm and are excited about his vast knowledge of the energy sector and of North Carolina’s government policies that support clean energy development," said Smith Anderson Managing Partner Byron Kirkland. "In addition to his robust private practice, Mark was former general counsel for an organization of municipally-owned electric utilities, including two of the country’s largest power agencies. This experience coupled with his pragmatic business-focused approach sets him apart and will further enhance our firm’s renewable energy offerings for our clients."

Mark joins Smith Anderson from the national law firm of Troutman Sanders. He is heavily involved in civic activities and is currently serving his second term as a member of the board of directors of the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce and is also a member of the UNC Children’s Hospital Board of Visitors. He is an adjunct professor at his alma mater – the University of North Carolina School of Law – where he teaches a course focused on renewable energy transactions.

Smith Anderson’s Energy and Renewable Energy practice team of attorneys offers in-depth understanding of the energy business and the financing, contracting, siting, permitting, construction, operation and regulation of traditional, solar, wind and other renewable energy facilities.
