House Speaker Reappoints Smith Anderson Attorney to N.C. Military Affairs Commission

Kirk G. Warner will continue to serve on the Executive Steering Group and chair the Quality of Life Committee

House Speaker Tim Moore has reappointed Retired United States Army Colonel and Smith Anderson Partner Kirk G. Warner to serve as a Commissioner of the North Carolina Military Affairs Commission (NC MAC). Previously appointed by Governor McCrory in 2016 and re-appointed by Speaker Moore in January 2018 to fill the unexpired term of the Honorable George Breece, Kirk will continue to serve on NC MAC’s Executive Steering group and chair the Quality of Life Committee.  

“I am confident Kirk will have much to offer to the North Carolina Military Affairs Commission and will be effective and diligent in his service to our State,” said Tim Moore, Speaker of the House. 

Kirk joins his colleague David Hayden, Retired United States Army Colonel and Smith Anderson Attorney, who also serves as a Commissioner of the NC MAC. For over a century, Smith Anderson has demonstrated its commitment to service and support of our military. The firm has been recognized with several awards in recognition of this support, including receiving the Department of Defense’s “Pro Patria” Award – the highest state level award given by the agency in recognition of military support. 

After serving 33 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves, Kirk retired from the Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG) with the rank of Colonel in 2013. He served as the Deputy Legal Counsel to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. He also served as the first Commander of the 134th Legal Operations Detachment (LOD), Fort Bragg, North Carolina and as the Staff Judge Advocate of the Army’s Training Command. Kirk has also recently been elected to serve again on the USO of N.C.’s Board of Directors after serving as Vice-Chair for 10 years. In addition to his military experience, his dedication to military and veterans’ affairs as well as his commitment to many professional and community affiliations, Kirk is a seasoned trial attorney with experience spanning many litigation areas. He focuses much of his practice on complex and challenging "bet-the-company" litigation, and leads Smith Anderson’s Products Liability, Mass Tort and Catastrophic Loss, Asbestos and Toxic Torts, and Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Litigation practice groups.

NC MAC seeks to lead the coordination and planning for protecting military installations, improving quality of life and encouraging military-related economic growth in North Carolina through the involvement and interface between Commission members, installation commanders, community leaders, state and federal agencies, and other associated organizations. The Executive Steering Group (ESG) aims to improve, organize, and carry out Commission functions, gather information and evaluate progress meeting goals and objectives, and to execute Commission duties. The Quality of Life Committee was established to improve the quality of life for military members and families, and advises the General Assembly, Secretary of the DMVA and other State agencies on initiatives, programs, organizations and legislation that protect and enhance benefits and the quality of life for past and present military personnel and their families.
