Bo Bobbitt Unveils Shared Savings Distribution Model at National Meeting of Accountable Care Organizations

Results of yearlong study reveal best practices to maximize aligned incentives and ensure sustained success of organizations in the value-based care era

Raleigh, N.C. – On September 16, 2013, Bo Bobbitt presented to the National Association of Accountable Care Organizations (NAACOs) at its fall conference in Baltimore. His presentation, “Aligning Incentives in ACOs: Best Practices in Shared Savings Distributions – what will really work,” summarized the findings and strategies of the newly released white paper, “Distribution Based on Contribution – A Merit-based Shared Savings Distribution Model." He provided guidance on how practitioners can work together through the nationwide shift from a fee-for-service system, to a pay-for-value system, using savings distributions to assure sustained aligned incentives and long term success of accountable care organizations (“ACOs”) and similar integrated entities.

The fundamental goals of the new value-based care are to improve quality, patient engagement and efficiency through providers working collaboratively in new ways. In order to be successful, every provider needs to be committed to providing the highest quality at the lowest cost for patient populations. In is presentation, Bo shared guidelines and techniques from the shared savings distribution model that will allow any ACO to create a fair and sustainable shared savings distribution process that will, in turn, fuel provider commitment for the long run.

About the Shared Savings Distribution Model

The white paper, “Distribution Based on Contribution – A Merit-Based Shared Savings Distribution Model,” was compiled primarily by Bo Bobbitt, a partner at Smith Anderson, Perrin Jones, M.D. of East Carolina Anesthesia Associates, PLLC, and Greg Anderson, CPA/ABV, CVA of HORNE, LLP.  The savings distribution guide was reviewed by independent and health system ACO CEO’s and leaders. It was made possible through the financial support of the 38 medical organization members of the Toward Accountable Care Consortium (TACC) and a generous grant from the Physicians Foundation.
