Legal Across Borders
Smith Anderson and the Corporate Counsel section of the North Carolina Bar Association recently hosted a panel discussion titled “Legal Across Borders” as part of an annual speaker series. The panel was moderated by Smith Anderson partner Amy Batten and featured esteemed general counsels from multinational companies discussing how they address legal issues that stretch through their company and across borders.
The panelists included:
- Stefan John, Senior Vice President, BASF Corporation and General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of BASF North America
- Owen Lewis, General Counsel of Covance
- Christine Mazzone, General Counsel and Company Secretary of Plant Health Care, Inc.
- Courtney Thomas, Associate General Counsel of Trilliant Networks, Inc.
The panelists shared their experiences dealing with issues ranging from how to handle starting up operations in a new country to dealing with cultural differences, both within the company and externally. They also shared their thoughts on balancing legal issues across borders in areas such as privacy, employment and litigation, which frequently confront businesses operating in international environments.
